Mattress Toppers: How Often Should They Be Cleaned?

October 09, 2023 4 min read

Is it possible to wash mattress toppers? Certainly, but it depends on the type of mattress topper involved. Different materials are used to make mattress toppers. There are some with covers and some without. We first want to review what these products may be made from and why they might need to be cleaned.

Materials That Make Mattress Toppers

A mattress topper is usually made from foam (memory foam, natural latex, synthetic foams) and natural materials, such as cotton, wool, and down (feathers). Each of these materials requires its treatment. First, you should check the washing instructions provided by the manufacturer. If you do not adhere to them, any warranty that comes with the topper will be void.

Foam mattress toppers are a common choice today, particularly memory foam. You can often use washing machines to wash wool and other fiber toppers, but not foams. The following tips will show you how to clean mattress toppers without destroying them.

Is it necessary to wash mattress toppers regularly?

How do you wash mattress toppers, and can they be cleaned? You already know that you can wash them, so the first part of that question has already been answered. Depending on the purpose of the wash, how you should clean them may differ.

Regularly cleaning mattress toppers is essential, even if it is just vacuuming. About 30,000 – 50,000 skin cells are shed every hour by your body. During the year, you will shed up to 8 pounds of skin. Each night, a third of the accumulated body heat is deposited on your mattress or mattress topper.

Additionally, the mattress is likely covered in billions of dust mites – tiny, harmless organisms that do not bite you but eat your skin! People who are allergic to them may also develop allergies and risk health problems.

A Guide to Cleaning Mattress Toppers

Wash according to the instructions on the label.

You should set aside one day a year to clean your mattress made entirely of memory foam or your memory foam topper.

Memory foam absorbs dirt and odors differently from other bedding materials, making cleaning them essential.

We’ll show you step-by-step how to clean and sanitize a memory foam mattress pad with this guide.

Cleaning Process

A whole day is required for cleaning, which is drying time.

Ensure you have enough time to remove vomit, blood, or urine stains. Additionally to the regular cleaning, you will have to soak them in a baking soda mixture.

Unless expressly advised by the manufacturer, you should NOT wash mattress pads in the washing machine. However, memory foam mattress pads should only be hand washed unless they are not made of memory foam.

Step 1. Take the memory foam mattress pad out of bed.

First, removing the mattress pad from the bed is necessary before cleaning it. It would be best to place it in a room flooring with tile and good ventilation. Tile is the safest flooring material to use when cleaning a mattress pad since you will use liquids.

You can try putting the mattress pad on a tarp if your floor is made of carpet or hardwood, or you can hang it in your bathroom if it’s big enough.

Step 2: Vacuum debris and remove large items.

After removing any large debris, vacuum the memory foam mattress pad. Take care to remove everything from divots in an eggshell-style pad, especially anything that has created holes for itself.

Once big debris has been removed, vacuum the pad. A soft brush attachment and hose are sufficient for any vacuum. Ideally, you can use a cordless vacuum that is handheld.

Do not press too hard when vacuuming the mattress pad. You cannot remove dust and dirt unless you work in circular motions from top to bottom.

Step 3: Take care of stains and odors first.

It would help if you addressed stains and odors before cleaning the mattress topper. In any case, this step is imperative if there is urine, vomit, or blood on the mattress topper.

It would help if you treated stains with water first, then boric acid. Blot up the stain as necessary. An enzymatic pet stain cleaner may work better if this does not remove a serious stain. Using this method removes deep-seated stains.

If odors are coming out of your pad, use baking soda by sprinkling it and let it sit for 8 hours once the stains have been removed. The baking soda will work best if it is given this period. When the 8 hours have elapsed, remove the baking soda with a vacuum.

Step 4: Spray watery detergent onto the affected area.

Use a mixture of 2 parts water and 1 part laundry detergent to spray down your mattress pad. If possible, use a mild detergent designed for hand washing.

Ensure that you apply a thin layer of detergent, but do not soak the mattress.

Spritz the whole pad down and then flip it over and apply a thin layer of spray on the other side.

Step 5: Time to dry it.

Let the spray-down memory foam mattress topper dry by opening some windows.

It’s a good idea to let it sit overnight, so allow a minimum of 8 hours.

If the mattress pad is still wet after the 8 hours, flip it and let it dry longer.

Step 6: Vacuuming the residue.

If any detergent residue remains on the mattress pad after both sides are dry, vacuum it up with the vacuum another time.

Step 7: Place it back on your bed.

Put the mattress pad should be put back on your bed after you’ve everything is dried up, being extremely careful not to let any moisture remain. If the pad isn’t completely dry, it can develop mold, so make sure it is free of any moist spots.
