Types of Materials Used to Make Blankets

Blankets are made out of different materials such as polyester, cotton, or wool. The type of material affects the price, durability, and texture of the blanket. Here’s what you need to know about the different materials used to make blankets.

Cotton

All types of bedding, such as bedsheets, pillows, and bed skirts, are made out of cotton because it is hypoallergenic and breathable. The varying cotton stitch patterns affect a blanket’s texture and durability. The most common weave patterns are sateen and percale.

Wool

Wool blankets are heavy, warm, and made out of sheep’s wool. They are moisture-wicking, so you can always stay dry. Wool blankets are natural flame retardants, safe and non-toxic. However, they can be pretty expensive and often cause allergic reactions.

Down

It is a soft, luxurious, and warm material often used to fill duvets and comforters. Down is a pricier material than other blanket fills, so you can always choose an alternative, but it might not be as durable or traditional. Some people are also allergic to duck and goose feathers used to make down.

Vellux

Vellux is made of unique construction with an interior of polyurethane and an exterior of nylon. It is a soft and pliable fabric mostly used for hotel blankets. It is a very warm material that is durable without being too heavy. Vellux is hypoallergenic since it’s a synthetic material.

Synthetic

Synthetic materials are usually very affordable, hypoallergenic, and easy to maintain. The most common types are polyester, fleece, and acrylic.

  • Polyester is a very durable synthetic material but can be quite rough when used on its own. When blended with natural fibers, it becomes softer and more durable.
  • Acrylic – It is expensive and durable wool. It is an alternative to cashmere since it is very warm and lightweight. It doesn’t fade after washing.
  • Fleece – It is similar to wool, warm, and soft. It will not trigger allergies since it’s not made from animal fur.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will a Full-size Blanket Fit a Queen Bed?

You can use a full-size blanket on a queen mattress. Double beds and queen blankets are the same width depending on the brand, but they don’t have the same length. A full bed is 54 inches by 75 inches, while a queen bed is 60 inches by 80 inches. Choosing a too-small blanket for your mattress makes it too short and will not hang off the sides, affecting the overall visual appeal.

Should a Bed Spread Touch The Floor?

If your bedspread is touching the floor, it will collect dust and start wearing faster. Your blanket and comforter should reach the end of the mattress. If you want something longer, it should be a few inches off the ground.

Should I Buy a Blanket Bigger Than My Bed?

No. You don’t need to buy a blanket that’s bigger than your bed. However, you can get a more oversized blanket if you share a bed with someone. The blanket will not come off at night, and you will both have sufficient coverage when sleeping. When buying a bigger blanket than your bed, make sure it’s just one size bigger than your mattress.

Is There a Blanket Bigger Than a King?

There is an oversized king blanket measuring 132 inches by 120 inches. These blankets fit on Texas, Alaskan, and Wyoming king mattresses. They are quite rare, and unless you have an extremely large bed, you don’t need to search for an oversized king blanket.

Do You Know Your Next Blanket Size?

You should choose a blanket size depending on how you plan to use it. If it’s a standard sleeping blanket, make sure you choose a matching blanket for the mattress size. Depending on the thickness of your mattress, you can choose the next size. When buying a blanket for toddlers and infants, you should look for blankets for their age or something multifunctional and large.
